estetika 001 introduces the first release of the new imprint of jason patrick and pat king. the label s objective is to release a signature style of timeless techno. berlin-based artist mekas (originally from buenos aires) delivers the first 3 track record, nodata. a1 starts off the release with lebreton featuring qik. thick kick and bass anchor a beautifully warm hypnotic synth riff that filters meticulously throughout the track working hand in hand with a subtle atmospheric pad and spacious reverb touches to create a uniquely huge engulfing sound. b1 is the second track titled marshfield, a heavy tune for peak time. its kick, toms, and bassline form a rugged groove for its dark synth, which along with the mysterious pad capture the essence of the track while ride cymbals glisten and automate throughout. b2 is the third and final track, nothing, which continues the dark and mysterious vibe of the release. an acidy mid-range synth part works along with an ominous pad and well programmed hi-hats, claps, and rides with just the right reverb treatment to provide space and depth to the track.

rekids launch re-issue label entitled r-time records with four timeless tracks from sir lord comixx. having established a handful of renowned imprints such as rekids, pyramids of mars, cabin fever and the double r, matt edwards new venture aims to shine a light on classic tracks that didn t always get the recognition they deserve. amoon sir lord comixx and i go back a long way and we met through our friend justin isonoe in the early 90s,” says matt edwards. “i was still living in catford and would regularly drive over to justin s studio where he d play me all this crazy, otherworldly music from amoon and it blew my mind i was completely captivated by his unique take on techno. at the time i had no idea that we grew up in the same neighbourhood and amoon was living just around the corner so, of course, we hooked up and in 1996 i released an ep from him including one of his classics ur my omen on my hard up label.” composed of four tracks from separate releases, retroactive (part one) inaugurates with 1 4 the groove from sir lord comixx s danceteria ep on ugly music. produced in 96, the track s raw aesthetic features sharp percussion, heady melodies and a compelling groove. meanwhile, enemax - which appeared on 1a records demonstrates throbbing synths and shuffling drums. originally produced under his a.moon moniker in 98, funk box is the most robust track on the package with its thudding kicks and assortment of meandering sounds, before the azid jazz provides a deep and funky finale.

azimute, das sind cesare marchese und der einigen techno-insidern nicht unbekannte schweizer philippe quenum. was die beiden zusammen fabrizieren lässt uns tatsächlich sprachlos zurück: obwohl sie gerade mal auf sieben releases zurückblicken, haben die zwei es doch tatsächlich geschafft in kürzester zeit auf labels wie crosstown rebels oder sogar transmat zu landen… und jetzt auch noch den weg auf cocoon recordings gefunden! ihr titel „the secret“ gibt ein wenig vor, was wir gerade beschrieben haben, denn momentan kann man azimute noch wirklich als geheimtipp bezeichnen. ihr cocoon release dürfte einer unserer releases mit dem höchsten soul-faktor sein. betörende vocals, klackernde percussion-sounds aus den untiefen des techno-klanguniversums und im zusätzlichen house-mix noch mal alles mit warmen und hypnotischen filter chords dekoriert servieren uns azimute eine produktion mit unglaublich viel tiefgang. azimute erwischt uns hier voll auf dem richtigen fuß, die beiden originalversionen werden uns noch lange über die kommenden wochen begleiten. als bonus gibt es noch einen cristi cons remix obendrauf. in bester villalobos oder cadenza spielart entfaltet dieser über sage und schreibe 11 minuten und 34 sekunden seinen minimalvibe und öffnet damit noch mal eine weitere faszinierende musikalische tür. drei versionen, die alles aber nicht gewöhnlich sind und die hier seit tagen in heavy rotation laufen! mile grazie azimute!

amsterdam label taped artifact has lined up an ep from merv aka brian oldenborg and jan christiansen. after the re-melted reissue on styrax in 2015, this is the pairs third new ep in three years since coming back after first making music back in the mid nineties. their warm dub and techno style is still very much fresh and arresting. blueprint opens the ep with eight enthralling minutes of percolating drums and shuffling hi hats. frosty yet warm, it’s a cavernous affair with a hypnotic riffs sucking you in over and over. shine is more upright techno, but the rock solid kicks are still draped with rippling, static coated chords that ripple out in all directions. rotundum closes things out with synth waves gently breaking over hunched drums that build the pressure. it’s tense and engaging while remaining thoroughly atmospheric.

with every album project comes a proper remix pack. marco bailey has invited some of his most respected colleagues in modern day techno to come up with an interpretation of two of temper’s toughest cuts.
“planet mad” is being reworked by marcel fengler and andre kronert. fengler’s rework is an adventurous take on the original and has a strong emphasis on rhythm. without loosing with the original idea, fengler builds the rhythm section into a wash of bold drums and rich percussion. andre kronert’s take on “planet mad” pushes the track s idea into a different direction. kronert yet again proves to be a craftsman when it comes to textures and builds. while the recognizable bass sound of the original keeps thumping, atypical bits of fx are added to build on an unusual but very soothing atmosphere.
for the b side, “naga” is being reshaped by croatian master of electronics petar dundov and rotterdam based fast riser, koen hoets. petar dundov comes up with an esoteric take on “naga”. whilst respecting the form of the original, dundov goes one notch deeper with his wide array dub elements and feral hat sounds. koen hoets delivers a more demure take on “naga”. whilst the rhythm section might not be suitable for all club situations, this is adventurous techno at its best. noteworthy fx and soul touching strings that float throughout.

beautiful melodic driving techno by hiver. especially the title track stands out with a killer remix from jp enfant that adds some bottom weight and masculanity to the original! the italian pair of giuseppe albrizio and sergio caio recently released on belgium s curle label, and this ep confirms their talent. three original tracks ranging from driving techno to electro-tinged broken beat territory, with watery sound design, liquid keys and icy hi hats getting you into a trance. nice!!
